It changes how quickly your boiler loses efficiency, how often you replace a shower cartridge, and whether a softener is worth fitting at all.

Water hardness is measured in milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate — usually written as mg/l or ppm. The two are interchangeable. Anything above 200 mg/l is generally classed as very hard.

Three things stand out. First, it is Lichfield that carries the hardest water of the three, not Tamworth — at 255.8 mg/l it holds around a third more dissolved mineral than Sutton Coldfield. Second, Tamworth is still meaningfully harder than Sutton Coldfield, roughly 20% more in the same volume of water. Third, hardness varies within a town depending on which side of it you are on: Tamworth's western postcodes read 211.4 mg/l against 224.6 in the centre. What hard water is actually doing
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as rainwater passes through rock. It is not harmful to drink. The problem is what happens when you heat it: the minerals come out of solution and deposit as limescale.
Your boiler loses efficiency first
Scale forms on the hottest surface in the system — the heat exchanger. A layer of limescale acts as insulation between the flame and the water, so the boiler has to fire longer to reach the same temperature. You do not notice it happening. You notice the gas bill.
Appliances fail earlier than they should
Dishwashers, washing machines and combi boilers all contain heating elements that scale up. In a very hard water area, an element that should last a decade can fail in half that. The appliance is rarely worth repairing by then.
Showers and taps become a maintenance job
Thermostatic shower cartridges are the most common casualty. Scale builds inside the valve, the temperature control becomes erratic, and the part is often more than the labour to fit it. Spray heads block. Glass screens stay cloudy no matter what you use on them.
You use more of everything
Hard water reacts with soap rather than lathering. That means more detergent, more shampoo, more dishwasher salt, and more descaler for the kettle.
Softener or filter? They are not the same thing
This is where most homeowners get poor advice, because the two products solve entirely different problems and are frequently sold as though they are interchangeable.

A softener replaces calcium and magnesium with sodium through an ion exchange resin. It protects the whole house, but it is not a purifier — softened water is not intended as your primary drinking water, which is why a properly installed softener leaves the kitchen cold tap on hard mains.
Reverse osmosis does the opposite job. It sits under one sink, pushes water through a membrane that removes dissolved solids, and gives you genuinely clean drinking water at that tap. It does nothing for the rest of the house.
In a very hard area like Tamworth, most homes that solve the problem properly end up with both — a softener for the plumbing, reverse osmosis for the kitchen.
What about scale inhibitors and magnetic conditioners?
These are the cheap options, and they are worth understanding honestly. An electronic or magnetic conditioner does not remove hardness — the minerals remain in the water. The claim is that it alters how crystals form so they are less likely to adhere.
Evidence for these devices is mixed, and results in independent testing have been inconsistent. They may reduce scale in some installations. They are not equivalent to a softener, and we do not recommend them as the primary protection for an expensive heating system in a very hard water area. If your budget only stretches to a conditioner, a phosphate dosing cartridge fitted at the boiler is generally a better use of the same money.
How to find out where you actually stand

- Have the supply properly tested on site. Hardness, total dissolved solids, chlorine, pH and pressure — measured at your tap, with a written report and a recommendation you can act on or ignore.

How long does a softener last?
